Transport Sector in Zambia

Zambia’s transport industry falls under the Transport, Storage and Communication sector which contributed 10% to the country’s GDP in 2014. As a landlocked country Zambia’s economy needs a strong transport system to move exports and imports but current infrastructure is inadequate to match the desired levels of growth, and requires increased levels of investment.

Investment in the Sector

Although the investments made in the rail freight sector are starting to yield returns, with tonnes exported by rail transport increasing by 72% from 5,469 tonnes in the first quarter of 2015 to 19,870 tonnes in the same period in 2016, freight transport by road remains the dominant form of transport. 91% of exported goods were transported by road in the first quarter of 2016, an increase of 27% over the same period in 2015. In the aviation sub-sector government in collaboration with the private sector has embarked on a programme to improve infrastructure at all international airports and intends re-establishing a national airline.

Regional Co-operation

Zambia realises the importance of regional co-operation for infrastructure development and supports the Inter-Regional Infrastructure Master Plan and proposed tripartite Free Trade Area which includes SADC, COMESA and the EAC. A total of 208 regional projects are listed as part of the Transport Sector Modal Development Plan.
